This piece began as an exploration of the signal as distinguished from its conceptual counterpart, noise. How might these signified concepts (in linguistic opposition) begin to blur and reflect one another through a sonic event? Throughout the performance, both signal and noise are composed through the signal process. The score uses traditional notation and a series of graphical symbols derived from the visualization of processed noise. The performer creates a series of pitched gestures that co-produce an electronic signal and digital noise. These elements are harmonized and summed via parallel compression within MaxMsp.
